Spark: Habits and Practices of Justice
I talked in this week's podcast to Dr. Olivia Scott. We met at Missio, though Olivia now calls Michigan home. She’s lived in many places spending about half of her childhood in Luxembourg and Canada. She works as a university psychologist and has the belief that faith and psychology inform one another in meaningful ways that transform lives. She is passionate about promoting the stories and visibility of underrepresented groups and our conversation was about the practices and habits of justice. We talked about rest, apology, discomfort, repair, welcoming feedback and not dismissing emotion all as part of justice work within a relational framework.
She also named the practice of seeking justice: being intentional about learning where injustice takes place as a way of helping us know how to participate in the work of justice. Below is a list of resources Jonny put together and in light of February being Black history month we thought it a good idea for some of us to familiarize ourselves again with these resources as a tangible way of seeking justice.
Here you will find articles, podcasts, videos, and books on race and injustice in the United States. Some of these resources are from mainstream sources but many come from leaders within the church who are helping us understand race, power, and injustice through the reality of the Kingdom of Jesus.
This list is by no means exhaustive, but these resources have shaped us and are continuing to transform the landscape at Missio. By sharing these resources we hope to not only challenge and encourage one another but also to press further, together, into the heart of the gospel. Conversations about race and justice are not partisan or cultural for the Church. No, reconciliation and justice are fundamental to the gospel and the mission of the local church.
