TMD - Explore Group Discussion Guide
Summary:
Together we’re discussing our communal practice Explore, based on a story of unexpected adventure and Paul's journey in Acts 16. The heart of the discussion focuses on how God often works ahead of us, inviting us to explore and follow where He leads, even when it's not what we expected. Paul’s willingness to adjust his plans and embrace the unexpected led to his encounter with Lydia, a pivotal moment in the early church. This practice of exploration – listening to God, paying attention, and embracing the surprises He brings – is essential to deepening our faith.
Reflection Questions:
Personal Experience with Exploration:
Jonny shared a story of exploration that started with a fishing trip but led to a series of surprises. Have you ever had an experience where your plans changed, but it led to something unexpectedly good?
How do you personally feel about moments when your plans are disrupted? Do you welcome those surprises or resist them?
Spiritual Curiosity:
In Acts 16, Paul’s plans were halted twice by the Holy Spirit, and he had to adapt. How does this challenge the way you think about your own spiritual journey?
Where in your life do you feel like God might be leading you into something unexpected or unknown?
Exploring with Intentionality:
Paul slowed down, listened, and eventually encountered Lydia by the river. What practices can help us slow down and pay attention to what God is doing around us?
Are there areas of your life where you might need to slow down to notice what God is up to?
Trust and Risk:
Paul’s journey required trust, and at times, taking risks. What is one small risk you could take this week to explore where God might be working, whether it’s a conversation, a relationship, or a new opportunity?
How can curiosity and exploration deepen our relationships with others, ourselves, and God?
Helpful Instructions for Leaders:
Set the Tone:
Create an open and welcoming space. Let participants know that this conversation is about curiosity, not about having the right answers. Encourage a spirit of exploration and reflection.
Share a brief version of Jonny’s story to start the discussion. Feel free to add your own experience of surprise or exploration if it helps connect with your group.
Encourage Vulnerability:
The theme of being open to disruption and surprise can bring out both excitement and fear. Encourage participants to be honest about their own struggles with control or uncertainty. Ask follow-up questions that invite deeper reflection.
Foster Active Listening:
Exploration often begins with listening – to God, to others, and to our own hearts. Model good listening by giving space for each person to share without interruption. Encourage participants to listen for common themes or surprises in what others share.
Invite Application:
Help participants connect the discussion to their daily lives. End the conversation by asking each person to think of a concrete way they can practice spiritual curiosity and openness this week, whether by slowing down, paying attention, or taking a small risk.
Close in Prayer:
End the session by inviting the group to pray for open hearts, curiosity, and the ability to see where God is at work. Pray for specific opportunities to embrace the surprises God brings in the coming week.
