Extending Our table - potluck style guide

Introduction:
Throughout this series, we've explored the vision of extending our table—how God calls us into unexpected places and welcomes unexpected people. As we conclude, we focus on how we’re not just invited to sit at the table but to contribute to the meal. Like a potluck, God calls each of us to bring our unique gifts to share.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Reflect on a time you hosted a meal or attended a potluck. What made that experience meaningful?

  2. Jonny mentioned his love for cooking and hosting, even though he’s not the best cook in his group. Have you ever felt like your skills weren’t the strongest but still wanted to contribute?

  3. Read 1 Corinthians 12:4-7, 12-13. What stands out to you about Paul’s description of spiritual gifts and the body of Christ?

  4. The Corinthian church struggled with division and status. How does the imagery of a shared meal help reframe unity and participation?

  5. The early Jewish religious system had strict boundaries on who could participate. How does Pentecost (Acts 2:17-18) change this story? What does it reveal about how the Spirit works today?

  6. At Missio Dei, we believe God is expanding the table in our city, homes, and workplaces. Where do you see this happening?

  7. What are your gifts? How do you feel invited to bring them to the table—whether in church, work, or your community?

  8. If you’re unsure about your gifts, who could offer insight? What steps could you take to explore new opportunities?

Closing Prayer & Practice:
Prayer:
God, thank You for inviting us to Your table and for extending Your welcome to all. Help us recognize the gifts You’ve given us and to bring them with courage. May we serve, love, and participate in Your work, knowing that each of us is needed and empowered by Your Spirit. Amen.

Practice:
This week, be mindful of opportunities to contribute—whether in conversations, at work, or in a gathering. Pay attention to where you can bring your gifts. If you’re unsure, ask a trusted friend what they see in you. Then, take one small step to bring your gift to the table.
